THE GRADUATE 1967
This scent is based on the scene in The Graduate when Mrs. Robinson first tries to seduce Benjamin Braddock.
At the heart of the fragrance lie musky spice notes which are suggestive of the alluring seductress; Mrs Robinson. The lighter notes of tropical greens and fern echo Benjamin Braddock, a naïve, but also potent, college graduate. These parts are thread together by the smokey and resinous woody base notes which mimic the 1960's Californian interior (the production designer, Richard Sylbert, called this room the 'den of the tigress'). The result is a smouldering, rich and ambient perfume.
NOTES: Waxed wood, fresh fern, tropical greens, fire smoke, black pepper, clove buds, dark amber.
GREAT EXPECTATIONS 1998
Satis House. The clocks are stopped, the air is thick with dust, and the wedding cake lies uneaten.
This scent is based on the scene in Alfonso Cuarón's film adaptation of Great Expectations when lovers Pip and Estella waltz through the ruined ballroom of Miss Havisham, and shafts of golden light bestow the scene with a forgotten beauty.
The earthy base notes of oakmoss and patchouli evoke the wild and overgrown vines which have crept into the house. At the heart of the fragrance lie rich and intimate notes of tobacco and leather. The top notes of autumn leaves and soil capture the mysterious romance which, like a mist, drifts through the scene.
NOTES: Tobacco, oakmoss, patchouli, autumn leaves, soil
RAISE THE RED LANTERN 1991
A summer night around the Mahjong table in Meishan's Room. Drifting gently from the record player, a song from her past life as an opera singer. In this scene from Zhang Yimou's 1991 film Raise the Red Lantern we meet faded dreams and ill fated love.
Graceful top notes of light and citrus Chinese Rose crown the fragrance. Heart notes of Juniper Berry, Rosewood and spicy, woody Rose Accord recall society China in the 1920's. At the base of the scent, Chilli Seed speaks of Meishan's fierce envy; Incense of looming tragedy.
NOTES: Chinese rose, Rose Accord, Juniper Berry, Rosewood, Incense & Chilli Seed Oil
THE BLUE LAGOON 1980
Life is a sweet paradise on this desert island and the temperature is rising. Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins are shipwrecked as children in the 1980 classic Blue Lagoon, and as adolescence kicks in these bronzed beauties face a bewildering yet irrepressible desire for each other.
For the dizzying heights of youthful romance the fragrance displays a delicate yet bittersweet, floral top note of Neroli. Bountiful aromas of sweet Fig and lush Fresh Grass lie at the heart of the perfume. At the base: herbaceous & woody Artemisia is redolent of driftwood – or perhaps the teen lovers' hut soaking in the tropical rain, with spicy Nutmeg for a hint of their earthly, primal longings.
